During the 1980s, Tesago was a loosely-affiliated group of scientists, doctors, and fringe political figures who believed (or claimed to believe) the end of the Cold War would trigger a 30-year period of unparalleled pestilence and suffering. Rather than struggle through this unbearable hardship, clients of Tesago were promised the opportunity to "sleep" for 30 years and be "regenerated" in the bright future world of 2017, living out a life of leisure on a patch of land in Lander, Wyoming, dubbed "the base."

Prior to "sleep," clients would sit for exhaustive, probing interviews. "Sleep" was actually a pleasant euthanasia cocktail delivered by Dr. Herb ben Heever, one of the founders of Tesago. Co-founder Evenest Gyves Hen had devised a scheme where orphans from Berlin would be paired with the institute and groomed into individual euthanized clients. At age 30, these subjects would be sent to The Base in Lander to live out lives similar to that of their corresponding 1987 client.
